Guidelines for employers

About 20,000 people in Switzerland are HIV positive. Annually another 700 – 800 learn about their HIV infection. Thanks to medical progress, people with HIV can as a rule live and work normally. They are, however, often prevented from doing so as a result of prejudice and discrimination, for instance during the application process, or at the workplace itself.

The brochure “HIV in the Working Environment“ focuses in particular on the employer. On the one hand, it provides fundamental information on HIV and AIDS, while on the other hand it offers insights into the impact HIV has on the company, in particular pointing out the various aspects one has to pay attention to in relation to working life (data protection, insurances, etc.) Greater knowledge helps not only the individual living with HIV/AIDS, but also the company as HIV mostly affects adults of working age who might be your employees, your customers or your clients.

HIV is often misunderstood and can, therefore, lead to discrimination against HIV positive people. A work atmosphere in which discrimination and mobbing prevail has a negative effect on productivity. Through information and raised awareness such misunderstandings can be avoided.
